See and be seen: how Garmin Varia radar works

< 1 min read

The Varia radar from Garmin is a Bluetooth-enabled rear detection system for bicycles, designed to warn cyclists of vehicles approaching from behind, while also alerting these vehicles to the cyclist’s presence.

/!\ Radar does not replace cyclist vigilance at all times. Stay aware of your surroundings.

BikeCompanion is one of the few applications to support connection with Garmin Varia.
When Garmin varia radar is connected, a green sidebar appears on the left (or right) side of your screen.

During your ride, the vehicle’s sidebar will change color to indicate when vehicles are approaching (orange) and to warn of vehicles travelling at high speed (red when a vehicle is approaching at high speed).

Audio notifications help you stay focused on the road.

A sound alerts you to the approach of one or more vehicles from 140 meters away, while another distinct sound indicates when the road behind you is clear, i.e. there are no more vehicles in the vicinity.
The number displayed at the very bottom of the sidebar corresponds to the remaining battery life of your Garmin Varia radar.

If you encounter any issues pairing and operating your radar, we invite you to consult this page.
