Tips

Climb analysis: This Category 2 climb gets progressively harder. The first 5 km (gradients of 1% to 3%) serve as a warm-up. Difficulty ramps up noticeably from KM 5, with a sustained stretch at 5% and 6%, peaking at 7% over the final 600 metres. At 12.6 km long, with a steady gradient through the second half, this is a demanding col.

Pacing tips:

1. Managing your pace early on: Make the most of the gentler opening kilometres (1%-3%) to settle into a comfortable rhythm without going too hard. This saves energy for the steeper sections.

2. Preparing for the hard sections: The steepest ramps (6%-7%) are concentrated between KM 8 and the top. Save something in the tank for this crucial stretch so you don't blow up.

3. Keeping a steady effort: The 4% average gradient is misleading. Focus on a steady power output or cadence, especially between KM 5 and 12, where the gradient stays remarkably consistent between 4% and 6%.

About the climbs to this summit

From riders who have climbed it, the ascent to Przełęcz Okraj is an authentic and demanding ride. The road, described as kręta (winding), runs through an endless forest and calls for some experience, especially in winter when chains may be needed. But the effort is more than repaid.

What makes this climb special is the feeling of riding up towards a border. At the top, at over 1050 m, you roll into a lively spot where the Polish and Czech roads meet. Riders describe an alpine atmosphere, with car parks, schroniskos (refuges), and the famous browar Trautenberk on the Czech side for a well-earned beer.

The scenery is unanimously praised as spectacular. After the grind up through the trees, reaching the pass delivers superb panoramic views over the Karkonosze, with the Śnieżka often in your sights. It's a great base for extending the adventure by bike or on foot on either side of the border.

Some riders do point out a few practical realities: the road on the Polish side is reported to need repairs, and in peak season the approaches can get pretty busy. Even so, the overall experience is described as memorable, combining the satisfaction of a good climb with the reward of a place whose atmosphere is unlike anywhere else in Central Europe.
