Difficulty breakdown: At 6.3 km with 226 m of elevation gain and an average gradient of 3.6%, this 3rd category climb is still manageable and fairly steady. The real work comes in the second half: the km 5.0-5.5 (5%) and km 5.5-6.0 (6%) sections are the steepest, while the km 0.5-1.0 stretch at 1% gives you a rare breather. The km 1.5-2.0 section at 5% is also a first real test right in the heart of the climb.
Pacing tips:
1. Go easy off the line. The first few kilometres, especially km 0.0-0.5 at 4%, should be ridden at a moderate effort so you still have some gas left for the finish.
2. Make the most of the flat. On the km 0.5-1.0 stretch at 1%, spin an easy gear, keep a steady rhythm and get your breath back before the next ramp.
3. Save something for the finish. Tackle km 5.5-6.0 at 6% seated, in a gear that suits you, then ease off a touch on the km 6.0-6.3 section at 2% and finish strong.
The reviews of Bukovets pass are short, and they keep coming back to one thing: the views. Several riders talk about scenery and stunning panoramas at 830 metres above sea level. One calls it the "gateway to the Carpathians", and another says you've got it all up there.
On the road, opinions are more mixed. One rider finds it "very nice", but another points out that the views aren't visible from the tarmac, and that the track to the Pysanyi Kamin rock starts right there. Riders describe pretty steep grades both climbing and descending. In winter, they consider the climb dangerous: winter tyres are mandatory, and carry chains in case there's snow.
Around the pass, there are a few things to do. The Pysanyi Kamin rock is reachable on a hiking trail, and some riders find it easy, even with kids. The Ihrets hotel at the top offers accommodation for anyone wanting to hike from the pass, and its owner runs hang gliding flights. Supplies are also available on site, along with a small lake for anglers, a church, and the Bukovets waterfall.
Not every review is glowing. Two people write that the place has nothing special about it, and another regrets that there's no viewpoint, just a sign. One rider also notes that the lack of snow over winter 2020-2021 was a shame, though it didn't take away from the pleasure of the view.
