Tips

Difficulty breakdown: This Category 2 climb is a steady 4.5 km grind with 245 m of elevation gain, averaging 5.4%. There's no real wall on the profile, but the KM 0.5-1.0, KM 2.0-2.5 and KM 3.0-3.5 sections, all at 7%, are the toughest bits. The difficulty comes mostly from the length and the string of sustained gradients, with KM 3.5-4.0 at 3% offering the only real respite.

Pacing tips:

1. Hold back at the bottom. The first 500 meters at 6% (KM 0.0-0.5) tempt you to go out too hard, whereas a steady pace from the start saves some matches for later.

2. Recover in KM 3.5-4.0. Use the 3% section to get your breathing back and settle into a rhythm before tackling KM 4.0-4.5 at 5%.

3. Prepare for KM 3.0-3.5. Drop onto an easier gear before this 7% section, stay loose on the pedals and keep a smooth cadence to limit lactic build-up.

About the climbs to this summit

The reviews of Bukovets pass are short, and they keep coming back to one thing: the views. Several riders talk about scenery and stunning panoramas at 830 metres above sea level. One calls it the "gateway to the Carpathians", and another says you've got it all up there.

On the road, opinions are more mixed. One rider finds it "very nice", but another points out that the views aren't visible from the tarmac, and that the track to the Pysanyi Kamin rock starts right there. Riders describe pretty steep grades both climbing and descending. In winter, they consider the climb dangerous: winter tyres are mandatory, and carry chains in case there's snow.

Around the pass, there are a few things to do. The Pysanyi Kamin rock is reachable on a hiking trail, and some riders find it easy, even with kids. The Ihrets hotel at the top offers accommodation for anyone wanting to hike from the pass, and its owner runs hang gliding flights. Supplies are also available on site, along with a small lake for anglers, a church, and the Bukovets waterfall.

Not every review is glowing. Two people write that the place has nothing special about it, and another regrets that there's no viewpoint, just a sign. One rider also notes that the lack of snow over winter 2020-2021 was a shame, though it didn't take away from the pleasure of the view.
