Tips

Difficulty analysis: This climb has a deceptive profile. The first 6 km (gradient 2 to 4%) are a tricky warm-up. The real difficulty starts at KM 7, where the gradient suddenly jumps to 9% and stays between 9% and 16% for the last 15 km. The final section (KM 19-21.2) with 15-16% gradients is particularly brutal.

Pacing advice:

1. Pacing: Resist the temptation to go too hard in the early, easy kilometres. The climb really starts at KM 7. Settle into a steady, sustainable rhythm from that point to save your legs.

2. Anticipating the gradients: Mentally prepare for the series of 12-13% ramps between KM 11 and 18, and the 15-16% spikes near the end. Save something in the tank for these critical sections.

3. Gearing: Fit a gear ratio suited to the long pitches above 10%. Being able to spin smoothly (high cadence) on the steepest parts will be key.

About the climbs to this summit

According to riders who have climbed it, the ascent to Kalin Dam is an epic adventure, often described as the "Bulgarian Transfăgărășan". The concrete road, badly broken up in places, is a real technical challenge with an average gradient of 12% over 14 km. Riders agree you need a mountain bike or a gravel bike, as the surface is far too rough for a road bike.

What makes this ride unique is the feeling of climbing towards the summits. Riders report a spectacular gain in altitude, up past 2600 metres, through an increasingly barren and grandiose landscape. The effort is rewarded with breathtaking views over the Rila and Pirin mountains, a sense of vastness and crisp, crystal-clear air.

Riders do warn, though, that the adventure isn't without risk. The road is extremely narrow, making passes with the occasional 4x4 or motorbike very tricky. There's practically nowhere to pull over. Caution is essential, especially on the descent, where you have to manage fatigue and the technicality of the route.

Despite the difficulty, everyone agrees on the final reward. Reaching the dam, the highest in the Balkans, gives a magical feeling and a deep sense of accomplishment. For many, it's an unforgettable experience that stays with you, a must for any cyclist looking for challenges and jaw-dropping scenery.
