Tips

Difficulty breakdown: At 4.2 km with 165 m of elevation gain and an average gradient of 4%, this Category 3 climb is within reach of any regular rider. The real test comes in the second half: from km 2.5 to the summit, the gradient rises to 6-7% over nearly 1.7 km, which really punishes the legs. Between km 0.5 and km 2.5, the road alternates between 1% and 3%, giving you some welcome recovery stretches.

Pacing tips:

1. Ride the start within yourself The km 0.0-0.5 section at 4% should be taken at a moderate pace so you don't burn through your reserves right from the bottom.

2. Recover on the false flats Use the km 0.5-1.0 section at 1% and the 2 and 3% stretches (km 1.0-2.5) to pick up the rhythm again and get your gear right.

3. Keep it steady to the finish Hit km 2.5 with a smooth, consistent cadence, staying seated if you can, to hold the 6-7% all the way to km 4.2.

About the climbs to this summit

People who've been over the Przełęcz Wyżna mostly talk about the view first. You can see the Połonina Wetlińska and the Połonina Caryńska from the car park, and several riders also mention the Tarnica. The pass is the starting point for the Połonina Wetlińska via the yellow trail, and for the Rawki. The ride up to the Chatka Puchatka takes about an hour according to reports, a bit over an hour and fifteen for some.

On the road, people talk about the switchbacks. The ones on the Brzegi Górne (Berehów) side are longer and open up more to the landscape than the ones on the Wetlina side. That's the view you see on a lot of postcards. Out of season, snow is an issue: one rider reported snowdrifts over a metre high along the edge of the road, ruts, and recommends snow chains. Another says you really need to watch where you put your wheels, because the road sometimes has no shoulder.

The point that comes up most often is the car park. Prices vary from report to report, from 15 to 40 złotys per day, and many feel it's too expensive for what you get. Several say it fills up fast, especially at weekends and in spring, and that at certain times of the morning the lines of cars stretch more than a kilometre back through the bends. Parking is tight, and getting out takes a lot of manoeuvring. Some complain about the staff, whom they find cold or unpleasant. The toilets are either paid or absent near the car park, and one visitor says they didn't get a ticket. One tip keeps coming up: ask the staff whether you can go to the restaurant to avoid the parking fee.

Once you're there, the atmosphere changes with the season. There's a restaurant, the Zajazd u Górala, serving hot meals, and a kiosk selling souvenirs near the starting point. Outside holiday periods, some describe a calm, almost empty place, for example in November or during the winter holidays. Others say the pass is very busy from early morning. For families with young kids, several recommend it as a starting point, with a short trail that isn't very hard.
