Difficulty analysis: At 4.9 km, with 268 m of elevation gain and an average gradient of 5.5%, the Dušná is a Cat 3 climb with a fairly steady effort. The start, at 3% over the first 0.5 km, is very easy going, then the gradient ramps up to 6-8% between the 1st and 4.5th km, with a harder stretch at 8% between the 2nd and 2.5th km. With no real flat section over most of the climb, your legs slowly fade, and the finish is just a short descending section (-1%) from 4.5 to 4.9 km.
Pacing tips:
1. Keep some in the tank from the start. On the first 0.5 km at 3%, resist the urge to go out hard, because the real pain doesn't start until after the 1st km.
2. Ease off on the 8% section. Between the 2nd and 2.5th km, stay in a gear you can turn while seated, with a smooth cadence, and don't try to chase down the other climbers.
3. Hold your rhythm to the end. Between the 4th and 4.5th km, the gradient stays at 7%: hold a steady pace, then use the -1% descent from the 4.5th to the 4.9th km to recover and wind it up cleanly for the finish.
