Tips

Difficulty analysis: This 7.2 km climb with 454 m of elevation gain, at an average gradient of 6.3%, is rated Category 1 and demands a sustained effort over its length. The hard part is concentrated between KM 3.5-4.0 and KM 5.0-5.5, where the gradient hits 11%, 9%, 11% and then 13% with no real respite. The only notable breathers are KM 1.5-2.0 (-1%) and KM 2.0-2.5 (1%), while the final kilometres, between 5% and 6%, still bite when your legs are already cooked.

Pacing tips:

1. Start easy Use the KM 0.0-0.5 section at 2% to find your rhythm, and don't go too hard before the KM 0.5-1.0 section at 9%.

2. Recover on the flat bits Make the most of KM 1.5-2.0 on the gentle descent to loosen up your muscles, drink and eat without letting your cadence drop.

3. Tame the heart of the climb Between KM 3.5 and 5.5, pick a gear that lets you keep a steady cadence, and save your last reserves for the 5-6% ramps from KM 5.5 to the top.

About the climbs to this summit

Those who have done the climb of Seminung via Teba Pering describe a fairly long hike, on a trail that is well maintained. The route is also considered suitable for beginners who are in good physical condition.

The point that comes up most often is the view over Lake Ranau, which one witness describes as the second largest lake in Sumatra. Another hasn't yet been able to enjoy the beauty of the place by this route, and hopes to come back.

On the basecamp side, the reviews are noticeably less positive. The toilets are considered very bad, and one witness describes them as downright disgusting. The Lumbok basecamp lacks water and a musholla to rest in, but the staff are welcoming and it is possible to rent camping gear.

Camping spots are limited, and one witness recommends doing the round trip in a single day instead, what is known here as tektok.
