Difficulty breakdown: This 5.6 km climb with 479 m of elevation gain averages 8.5%, which logically puts it in the hors catégorie bracket. The first kilometres, between 4% (KM 0.0-0.5 and KM 0.5-1.0) and 6% (KM 1.0-1.5 and KM 1.5-2.0), let you settle into a steady rhythm before the gradient starts to bite. The heart of the climb runs from KM 2.0-2.5 to KM 5.0-5.5, with sections at 10%, 11% and up to 15% on KM 4.0-4.5, the toughest point on the route. The finish at 8% on KM 5.0-5.5 is still sustained and shouldn't be underestimated.
Tips for managing your effort:
1. Pace the start On the opening kilometres at 4%, sit well below your threshold so you reach the steepest section with fresh legs.
2. Prepare for the 15% ramp On KM 4.0-4.5, shift into a gear light enough to keep a smooth cadence, even when seated.
3. Manage the finish Between KM 4.5-5.0 at 12% and KM 5.0-5.5 at 8%, keep some energy in the tank and ease back into a steady rhythm without blowing up.
Those who have done the climb of Seminung via Teba Pering describe a fairly long hike, on a trail that is well maintained. The route is also considered suitable for beginners who are in good physical condition.
The point that comes up most often is the view over Lake Ranau, which one witness describes as the second largest lake in Sumatra. Another hasn't yet been able to enjoy the beauty of the place by this route, and hopes to come back.
On the basecamp side, the reviews are noticeably less positive. The toilets are considered very bad, and one witness describes them as downright disgusting. The Lumbok basecamp lacks water and a musholla to rest in, but the staff are welcoming and it is possible to rent camping gear.
Camping spots are limited, and one witness recommends doing the round trip in a single day instead, what is known here as tektok.
