Tips

Difficulty breakdown: Over 5.3 km for 238 m of elevation gain and an average gradient of 4.5%, this Category 1 climb is more about pacing than raw power. The first part is ridden at a steady tempo, with sections between 2% and 5% and an almost flat stretch between km 1.0 and km 1.5. The real test comes in the last few kilometers, between km 4.0 and km 5.0, where the gradient ramps up to 9% and then 12%, before easing to 4% from km 5.0 to the summit at km 5.3.

Tips for pacing yourself:

1. Don't go out too hard. In the opening kilometers (0.0 to 1.0), hold a steady effort so you still have something in the tank for the finish.

2. Make the most of the breathers. Use the flat section from km 1.0 to 1.5 and the 1% grade from km 3.5 to 4.0 to recover, drink, and find your rhythm again.

3. Tackle the final ramp smartly. Shift to a lighter gear from km 4.0, keep a smooth cadence through the 12% section from km 4.5 to 5.0, then pick up the pace slightly over the 4% from km 5.0 to 5.3.

About the climbs to this summit

Riders who have come over the Haast Pass first describe a landscape that keeps changing: snow-capped peaks, rainforest, tree ferns, rivers and braided gravel beds. Several mention cicadas in the trees. They say you need to ride easy and stop often.

The waterfalls are the big stops. Riders name Depot Creek, Roaring Billy, Thunder Creek and Fantail Falls, then the Blue Pools for a swim. From Haast, Depot Creek is about 20 minutes away, Roaring Billy 23, Thunder Creek 40 and Fantail Falls 45. Most of the walks only take a few minutes, except the trek to the Blue Pools, which is about 40 minutes of walking each way.

There are downsides too. The Blue Pools get very busy with tour buses and day trips out of Wanaka and Queenstown. The road is twisty and needs your full attention. Several reports mention rain, and one rider points out the road can be closed.

On the practical side, there are no shops or cafés between Haast and Makarora, so bring your own food and fill your bottles before you set off. A rest area with campsite, drinking water and toilets sits roughly halfway. One rider says there's a café close to Haast where you can grab breakfast.
