Tips

Difficulty analysis: This Category 2 climb has a progressive profile. The difficulty ramps up steadily over the first 6 kilometers, with a peak at 7% between km 5 and 6. The second half, although sustained (gradients of 5-6%), is slightly easier before a very gentle finish.

Pacing advice:

1. Start easy: The first kilometers (2-4%) give you time to settle into the effort without blowing up early.

2. Save something for the heart of the climb: Keep some energy in reserve for the steepest section (km 3 to 7, gradients of 6-7%), where the effort will be at its most intense.

3. Hold a steady rhythm: The gradient eases after km 7, so find a gear you can hold all the way to the top.

About the climbs to this summit

Cyclists who have climbed to the Chalet Smědava agree on one thing: reaching this modern chata, tucked away in the heart of the Jizera Mountains, is a well-earned reward. Many describe the recently rebuilt building as good-looking and blending nicely into the landscape, with a pleasant terrace to recover after the effort.

Food is central to the reports. The restaurant works on a self-service cafeteria system, which riders appreciate for its speed and for avoiding long waits. The local speciality, blueberry knedlíky (borůvkové knedlíky), comes up again and again as a real favourite, described as "excellent", "generous with fruit" and "a must". Other dishes such as goulash or strudel are also frequently praised for their quality and generous portions.

However, riders are unanimous on a less positive point: the prices are high. Most reports say the value for money feels off, with prices considered "totally out of line" for self-service food. The "altitude surcharge" argument is often challenged, since the chata is reachable by a paved road. The paid car park (100 CZK/day) is also frequently mentioned as a downside.

Despite the reservations about prices, the atmosphere and location are still much appreciated. Riders describe Smědava as a lively, strategic meeting point, ideally placed at the crossroads of hiking trails, mountain bike routes and cross-country ski tracks. It's the perfect spot to refuel in a relaxed atmosphere before heading back out to tackle the beauties of the Jizera Mountains.
