Difficulty breakdown: At 5.4 km for 225 m of elevation gain, with an average gradient of 4.2%, the Malý Šturec from Čremošné is rated Category 3, an intermediate climb. The real challenge is consistency: no section goes above 6%, but the gradient stays hard all the way up, between 3% and 6%. The steepest part is between km 1.0 and km 1.5 at 6%, while km 1.5 to 2.0 at 3% gives you a bit of a breather. The stretch from km 4.0 to km 5.0, at 4-5%, slowly grinds your legs down before the finish.
Tips for pacing the climb:
1. Manage the start. From km 0.0 to 1.0, at 4%, settle into a steady rhythm and don't go chasing wheels. The first few kilometres will cost you later if you go out too hard.
2. Prepare for the 6% ramp. From km 1.0 to 1.5, shift down before the kick, stay in the saddle and keep a smooth, fluid cadence so you don't dig yourself into a hole.
3. Save something in the tank. Between km 4.0 and km 5.0, hold back some energy for the last section at 3% (km 5.0 to 5.4), where you can push the pace and finish strong.
The Malý Šturec pass sits at 890 m, on the ridge between the Velká Fatra and the Kremnické vrchy. For riders who talk about it, it's mostly a starting point. You get there by car or by the cyclobus that leaves from Banská Bystrica, then you head out towards the Skalka, or the other way towards Kráľova studňa and Krížna.
On the road, the feedback is pretty good: a quality cyclo route, described as a proper bike trasa. One rider calls it a super makačka, meaning a real grind that doesn't come easy. Nobody gives a gradient or a climb length, so I can't say how hard it is.
What comes up most is the nature around the pass: the forest, the birds, and plenty of trails heading off in several directions. The spot is also popular with hikers, on both the Fatra and the Kremnica side, with a good base for setting off on foot.
There are some less pleasant points too. One witness finds the place busy ("rušno", meaning full of people). Several crosses mark motorbike riders who died right there, which weighs heavily on the place. The summit of Malý Šturec, 250 m from the car park, has nothing special according to one hiker: the forest track gets you there in a hundred metres or so, and that's about it.
