Tips

Difficulty breakdown: The Волчьи ворота from Vladimirovka is a 4.2 km climb with 141 m of elevation gain and an average gradient of 3.4%, which puts it in 3rd category. The profile is uneven: the first three kilometres alternate between moderate gradients (3% and 1%) and a flat section (0% between KM 2.5 and KM 3.0). The real test comes in the final part, with 7% between KM 3.5 and KM 4.0, then 10% over the last 200 metres, which makes the finish noticeably harder.

Tips for managing your effort:

1. Save something in the tank early on. The 3% gradients from KM 0.0 to KM 2.5 tempt you to go too hard, but you need to pace yourself so you arrive fresh for the final section.

2. Recover on the flat from KM 2.5 to KM 3.0. This 0% stretch is the perfect chance to get your breathing back under control, drink, and recover some strength before the 4% section.

3. Tackle the final with an easy gear and a smooth cadence. Between KM 3.5 and KM 4.2, the 7% and then 10% ramps mean staying seated, keeping a fluid cadence, and not blowing up in the last few hundred metres.

About the climbs to this summit

The accounts start with the place itself, which is very beautiful. Two peaks look like gateposts, and several people talk about panoramic views. In spring there are lots of flowers, and on a clear day you can see the sea from up there. Some say it's a spot where you can stargaze in the evening.

The downside is also clearly stated. The road carries a lot of heavy trucks, including grain trucks that smoke and stink of burnt rubber. Some crawl along at walking pace, others do close to 120 km/h. In summer, cars from other regions add to the mix, and they don't always respect the signs. One rider describes a jam of about three hours after a crash involving military trucks and a grain truck. The place is considered dangerous, with accidents, some of them fatal.

Several riders also point to a lack of infrastructure. There's no viewpoint, no tourist facilities, and no pedestrian crossing on the road, which makes it hard to cross on foot, by bike or on a kick scooter. Lighting has been installed, but according to several people it doesn't work, which is a problem at night. Some are asking for a traffic light at the slip road, especially in the direction from the city towards Oubykh.

As for the road surface itself, opinions are more positive: the asphalt is considered good. The wind is strong, and it's colder than in town, especially in winter. One rider sums up the col as a climb he rides several times a day, with nothing special to say about it.
