Difficulty breakdown: At 4.9 km for 229 m of elevation gain and an average gradient of 4.7%, the Hliny / Przełęcz Glinne climb is still accessible, rated Category 3. The first 0.0 to 2.5 km sit at steady 3-4% gradients, which lets you settle into a consistent rhythm. Things ramp up noticeably between km 2.5 and 4.5, where the grade goes from 5 to 6%, then hits 8% over the final kilometres. That's the hardest section of the climb.
Tips for pacing your effort:
1. Stay steady from the start Don't go out too hard over the first 2.5 km at 3-4%, so you still have legs left for the 8% section.
2. Manage the 8% section Between km 4.0 and 4.9, pick a gear you can spin comfortably, stay seated if you can, and focus on a steady cadence rather than mashing the pedals.
3. Plan your nutrition Take your fuel before km 3.5, where the gradient starts to bite, so you reach the final part of the climb with enough in the tank.
Glinne Pass is mostly a starting point. Nearly every report says the same thing: you leave the car in the car park right on the Slovak border and set off on foot for Pilsko. According to the people we spoke to, it takes between 1h50 and 2h30 to reach the summit, depending on your pace and fitness.
The red trail, then the blue, starts out gently through the forest along the border. The gradient steepens as you climb, and Babia Góra gradually comes into clearer view behind you. One hiker did a loop: he went down the yellow trail, which he found really interesting, to the Hala Miziowa mountain hut, then climbed back up to the pass on the red trail through the Suchowary forest. Even in the rain, some people think the area is beautiful.
As for the atmosphere, there's a sheep farm selling sheep's cheese and oscypki, the small smoked mountain cheeses. Reports describe it as a quiet spot on weekdays. At weekends, however, the car park fills up fast: some recommend arriving before 8 a.m., otherwise cars end up parked on the pavements and on the grass. The car park was under construction in summer 2024 and in 2025, which reduces the number of spaces available. The price varies from one account to another: free for several people, 15 zł or 20 zł for the day for others.
Negative points come up often. The toilets are described as very dirty, sometimes out of order, and cost 2 zł. One witness saw wet wipes and other hygiene items thrown along the red trail, behind the car park. At the start of the trail the mud is deep, and one person left their shoes behind because of the clay. Public transport is limited: only one operator serves the area, and the nearest stop is about three kilometres away.
