Difficulty breakdown: The Vrícke sedlo is a 4.8 km climb with 215 m of elevation gain, averaging 4.5%, which makes it a Cat 3 climb: accessible but steady. The difficulty lies mainly in the consistency of the effort, as most sections sit between 4% and 5% with no real breather. The hardest stretch is KM 4.0-4.5 at 6%, just before a 290 m finish at 4%.
Pacing tips:
1. Ease into it The first 500 m at 3% give you a chance to find your rhythm before the gradient kicks up.
2. Manage KM 4.0-4.5 Save some legs for this 6% section by spinning an easy gear and staying seated.
3. Keep a steady cadence With the gradient hovering around 5% for much of the climb, favour a smooth, consistent cadence over surging and erratic accelerations.
At the pass, you reach a crossroads. Those coming from Klak go down the slope first, then if you keep going towards Skalky, a climb awaits you.
The track that leaves the end of Široká dolina and follows the yellow trail markers up to the pass is, according to one account, in very bad shape. Its author calls it a "disaster" and reckons it isn't worth the effort, even on foot.
The paved road comes up often in trip reports. One cyclist describes it as a rally stage, "downright exhilarating", especially on the Horná Nitra side.
The pass is also crossed by the Hero's Trail of the SNP (the Slovak National Uprising), which links Dukla to Devín. You can actually run into hikers following that route.
