Difficulty analysis: At 8.9 km, with 646 m of elevation gain and an average gradient of 7.3%, the Генухский перевал from Kidero is a demanding HC climb. The start is more rolling (3% then 1% between km 0.0 and 1.5), which gives you time to find your rhythm, but the real climbing kicks in at km 2.0 with 10% over the 2.0-2.5 section. The second half is the hardest, with ramps at 11% (km 4.5-5.0) and 12% (km 5.5-6.0 and 6.5-7.0) coming one after another with no real respite. The flat section from km 8.5 to 8.9 offers a welcome breather before the finish.
Tips for the effort:
1. Pace yourself from the start Don't go out too hard between km 0.0 and 2.0, where the gradient is gentle, so you have something left for the 10% ramp at km 2.0-2.5.
2. Choose your gear wisely On the 11-12% ramps (km 4.5-5.0, 5.5-6.0 and 6.5-7.0), spin a smooth, steady cadence and stay seated to conserve energy.
3. Manage your nutrition Drink and eat regularly from km 4.0, then use the flat section at km 8.5-8.9 to recover and get the legs turning again for the push to the summit.
