Tips

Climb analysis: This climb has an uneven profile, with the difficulty concentrated between KM 6 and 8, where the gradient hits 12% and 10%. The downhill section at KM 1.0-2.0 and the flatter stretches (2-3%) offer brief respites, but the 8% finish over the last 400 metres means you need to save something in the tank.

Pacing tips:

1. Pace yourself properly over the first 6 km so you hit the 12% wall (KM 6-7) without already being in the red.

2. Make the most of the easier sections (KM 4-5, 8-9, 11-13) to recover actively, keeping a steady cadence and never coasting.

3. Save some energy for the finale. The 8% gradient on the last stretch demands a sustained effort all the way to the summit.

About the climbs to this summit

For the cyclists who have climbed it, the ascent of Mount Glorious is an immersive full-nature experience, just thirty or so kilometres from Brisbane. The air is described as incredibly crisp, far from the urban traffic, and the atmosphere is made unique by the birdsong, notably the bell birds, and the serenity of the rainforest.

The road itself is presented as a beautiful but demanding ride. Riders' accounts describe a succession of tight switchbacks, steep pitches and breathtaking scenery through lush subtropical forest. However, riders stress that you need to stay alert: the road surface can be wet and slippery, even during the day, and the traffic, made up of motorbikes, cars and sometimes trucks, demands constant attention, especially in the blind spots.

The effort is more than rewarded by jaw-dropping viewpoints and by welcoming cafés at the summit, like the much-loved Elm Haus, where it's great to refuel. For many, it's a classic loop of about 100 km starting from Brisbane, considered one of the best rides in the region.

Experienced climbers find a challenging playground here, while less seasoned riders are warned: the road can be tricky for beginners. The advice that keeps coming back is to take your time, respect the speed limits and enjoy the scenery rather than chasing performance.
